1.4 General Principles of Ecology

Ecology: Study of interactions of living organisms with each other and their environment
Ecosystem: Community or organisms that interact with their environment
Biosphere: Region on earth where organisms live
Habitat: Place where an organism lives
Niche: Role of an organism in its habitat
Grazing Food chain: sequence of organisms with one species at each trophic level
Food Web: 2 or more interconnected food chains
Ecological pyramid of numbers: Shows # of organisms at each trophic level
Population: group of organisms living in a habitat that belong to the same species
Community: Group of organisms living in a habitat that beong to different species
Predation: Catching, killin and eating of another organism
Symbiosis: Biological relationship in which two or more species live in close proximity to each other and one or more benefit from the relationship, no organism harmed
Parasitism: One organism lives in or on another for its own benefit and the host is harmed
Pollution: Harmful addition to the environment
Conservation: Wise management of our existing natural resources

Environmental Factors
Abiotic: non living which has an affect on organisms in an ecosystem
Climatic: e.g. rainfall
Edaphic: factor relating to soil or geology of land e.g. pH
Biotic: living thing which effects other living things in an ecosystem

Competition
Struggle between organisms for limited resource
Contest competition: direct fight between two organisms for limited resource
Scramble competition: Struggle amongst number of organisms for a resource in short supply, each organism gets a small share

Nutrient Recycling
Process of exchanging important elements between living organisms and the environment
Carbon Cycle: Carbon is exchanged between living organisms and their environment
Nitrogen Cycle: Nitrogen is exchanged between living organisms and their environments
