1.2 The Characteristics of Life

The Characteristics of Life
Diversity of Life: Large variety of living organisms present on Earth
Features of life
- Biological Organisation (different levels of complexity e.g. cells)
- Nutrition (obtain and use food)
- Excretion (get rid of waste from metabolism)
- Response (react to environment)
- Reproduction (new offspring are a product of their parent[s])
*Debate over whether or not viruses are living; cannot independently reproduce, don't excrete as they have no direct waste product, don't show nutrition as they don't metabolise food for energy reproduction.

Metabolism: Sum of all chemical reactions in the body
Continuity of Life: Way in which living things arise from living things of the same type
Life: Possessing the 5 characteristics of life
